Ultra High-net-worth Individuals : continued growth

The global population of UHNWI (Ultra High-Net-Worth Individuals, those having more than 30 million dollars available for investment) is up 12.9% year-on-year, a marked acceleration aft er a 3.5% increase the year before.

Indeed, their number has increased from 226,450 to 255,810! During the same period, their combined wealth has increased from 27,000 to 31,500 billion US dollars, an impressive increase of 16.3%. This increase in value, for the 6th consecutive year, is a refl ection of conditions favourable to wealth creation internationally, despite certain areas of political and economic uncertainty. It is striking to note that UHNWI have seen their wealth and numbers increase across all continents, with a marked predominance in Asia.

Although its volume has increased markedly in absolute value, the asset breakdown of UHNWI remains almost unchanged in 2018. The liquid assets that they hold stood at 11 billion US dollars, which continues to be the largest part of their asset base (34.8%). This abundance of liquid assets is the result of a search for high returns, in a context of continuing extremely low interest rates as at end 2018, with limited potential for organic growth and the persistent prudence of investors in a potentially unstable geopolitical environment. However, it should be noted that this share of liquid assets in the asset base of UHNWI has fallen slightly over the course of the year, most likely due to the steady increase in the performance of fi xed income instruments and the strong performance of global stock markets which has resulted in new investment opportunities and encouraged a slight rebalancing among asset classes, particularly favouring business assets.
