Sarlat, a city of art and history, is part of a European reference network. The city is committed to increasing its inhabitants' and tourists' awareness on their environment and to introducing the young people to architecture and city planning. The city is not only attractive but its history is fascinating. For more than a thousand years, the city spread around an important Benedictine abbey rebuilt at the Roman period, in the XIIth century and was promoted a bishopric in the XIVth century. La Boétie was born there and very early introduced to the spirit of the Renaissance. More recently, the creation of the Festival des Jeux du Théâtre in 1952 gives a fresh boost to the city. Sarlat was the first city to implement the 'Malraux Law' voted in 1962 to rehabilitate the historical centers and preserve the Heritage Conservation Areas, 'les secteurs sauvegardés'. It was a second renaissance. Each year, the city welcomes more than a million tourists. Hence the cultural interest generated by this extraordinary heritage, which goes alongside with the gastronomical one, as Sarlat is also renowned for its huge market of truffles and regional products.
