What is a private mansion in Paris?
Born in the 17th century in the Marais and later the Faubourg Saint-Germain, the hôtel particulier is a townhouse built for a single family, traditionally set between courtyard and garden. In the 19th century, under the Second Empire and the Belle Époque, aristocrats and the upper bourgeoisie built mansions in western Paris with sculpted stone façades, enfilade reception rooms and grand staircases.
Staying in a private mansion: the Parisian art of living
Staying in a private mansion as a holiday rental means experiencing Paris as if in a family home: reception rooms for entertaining, a private garden or inner courtyard, separate suites for each guest and hotel-style services on request (butler, private chef, valet). A popular choice for family stays, private events or extended Parisian getaways.
Where to find a private mansion in Paris?
The finest private mansions in Paris are found in the Marais, birthplace of the genre with the Hôtel de Sully and the Hôtel Carnavalet, in the 7th arrondissement's Faubourg Saint-Germain, whose 18th-century mansions house ministries and embassies, around the Plaine Monceau in the 17th, and in the 16th, from avenue Foch to the Villa Montmorency. Each of these addresses remains exceptionally rare.
